Pray the Rosary

How to pray the Rosary: a gentle Catholic guide

The Rosary is a Catholic prayer of meditation with Mary, moving bead by bead through the life of Christ.

You can pray it as a full Rosary, one decade at a time, or with one intention when that is what today can hold.

What you need

Beads

The beads help your hands keep your place so your attention can stay with the prayer and the mystery.

Mysteries

The Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries help you meditate on the life of Christ.

Intention

Carry one person, need, gratitude, or question with you. Let the intention stay simple.

A simple Rosary rhythm

  • Begin at the crucifix with the opening prayers from memory or a trusted prayer source.
  • Move to the first mystery and name the intention you are carrying.
  • For each decade, pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be while staying with the mystery.
  • Continue through the mysteries as you are able, bead by bead.
  • End by giving the prayer back to God and keeping one line, intention, or gratitude in your journal.

Choosing the mysteries

Many Catholics pray different mysteries on different days of the week. If you are beginning, choose the set for the day, or choose one mystery that helps you stay close to prayer.

The point is not to hurry through every bead. The point is to pray with attention, even if your attention has to return gently many times.

When you only have a few minutes

  • Pray one decade with one intention.
  • Hold the beads and name the person you are praying for.
  • Stay with one mystery and write one honest line afterward.
  • Return later if the day gives you room.
