One honest line

One honest line: a small Catholic journal practice

One honest line is the smallest complete Catholic journal practice: one sentence written before God, as truthfully as you can write it today.

It can come from the daily readings, the Examen, a prayer intention, gratitude, grief, or the simple fact that you are beginning again.

What is one honest line?

It is not a shortcut around prayer. It is a gentle way to begin when a full reflection feels too large.

One line can name what you noticed, what you need, what you are grateful for, what you are carrying, or what you want to ask God to help you hold.

A one minute rhythm

Pause

Take one quiet breath and notice what is actually on your heart.

Name it

Choose one word, line from the readings, intention, or feeling that is asking for attention.

Keep it

Write one sentence. Let it be enough for today.

One honest line prompts

  • Today I am carrying...
  • The line I want to keep is...
  • God, I need help with...
  • One grace I noticed today was...
  • I am grateful for...
  • I am afraid of...
  • I want to begin again with...
  • Tomorrow, one small faithful step could be...

When one line is enough

Some days the faithful thing is a full reflection. Some days it is one sentence. Come Aside treats that small response as real, because it is still a way of praying, remembering, and returning.

Over time, one honest line can become a trail of what you noticed with God across ordinary days.

Begin with today

Open the daily readings, use one prompt, or end the day with the Examen. Then keep one sentence from that prayer.

Pray with the day

Keep a gentle daily rhythm.
